Wimbledon Tennis Background
Wimbledon is the oldest tennis tournament in the world; the fact it is the oldest is a factor in the fact is regarded as the most prestigious tournament. For its entire history, the tournament has been held at the All England Club in Wimbledon, London.
One of only 4 Grand Slam tennis tournaments, it is by far the most popular worldwide. It is also the only major to still be played on grass. This is due to the fact that the Australian Open has now shifted to hardcourt, following the trend of the other two Grand Slam tournaments.
The tournament was started in 1877, which is 141 years ago; to date, there has been 131 editions of the competition.
Traditionally, the tournament took place over two weeks in late June and early July; now, the event has been moved back by two weeks so that it begins in early July. This is due to changes in the tennis calendar that were recently made.
At the tournament, 5 major events are held every year. Examples of these major events would be the Male Singles and Female Doubles.
Wimbledon Tennis Traditions
One of the main traditions of Wimbledon is that competitors and Royal patronage must abide by a strict dress code that doesn’t allow much room for experimentation.
Also, it is traditional for strawberries and cream to be enjoyed at the tournament. This tradition has been around for many years, and strawberries and cream are more popular than they have ever been previously; In 2017, fans consumed 34,000kg of English strawberries and 10,000 litres of cream, demonstrating how popular they are for those who like to enjoy the events.
Another tradition is the fact that there is never any sponsor advertising around the court. This offers a better experience for those who go to enjoy the tournament.
