Golf Open (The Open Championship) Explained
Whilst golf isn’t for everybody, it’s a fascinating, exhilarating sport for those who are fans. For those who follow golf in the UK, one of the most reputable tournaments is The Open Championship (also known as Golf Open, The Open or the British Open). This tournament is actually the oldest of the 4 major championships in professional golf, making it a very reputable for those who go on to win it. It’s also the only major outside of the United States, another point that makes it uniquely fantastic. Played in mid-July, it’s a few months until the competition starts again. Here’s some background on the truly iconic tournament.
The Open Championship, or Golf Open, has been around for what feels like forever. And whilst the tournament hasn’t been around quite as long as that, the Golf Open was first played on the 17th October 1860, 157 years ago. First hosted by Prestwick Golf Club in Scotland, 8 professional golfers played 3 rounds of the twelve-hole course. This took part in one day, with Willie Park Sr. the victor on this occasion.
In the beginning, the trophy that was presented to whomever won was the Challenge Belt – which was just that: a belt! This belt was red leather, with a silver buckle. This trophy was retired in 1870, and the 1871 tournament cancelled. Why? Because the organisers hadn’t decided on a new trophy yet. In 1872, Young Tom Morris (once again the winner, the fourth time in a row) was awarded a medal. Then, The Gold Champion Trophy (better known as the Claret Jug) was created. This is still the trophy that is given to the winner now.
Recent Times (1995 onwards)
In 1995, John Daly was victorious over Costantino Rocco. This then led to an era of American domination. This was demonstrated by Tiger Woods winning 3 championships in the period of 2000 to 2006. After this domination, the Europeans finally broke an eight-year spell without the championship as Padraig Harrington overcame Sergio Garcia. Unusually for recent times, Harrington retained the title the following year, an impressive feat that isn’t usually achieved.
In 2013, Phil Mickelson added another major to his collection by winning his first Golf Open. By winning here, he had now won 3 of the 4 majors. All the needs to win now is the U.S. Open to earn a career grand slam. Remarkably, considering his huge success, he has finished runner-up six times in the tournament.
The most recent winner is Jordan Spieth, who won the 146th Open at Royal Birkdale in 2017 with a score of 268.
